pt.:
„Biological and Physical Aspects
of Bioelectromagnetic Interactions”
Biological effects of magnetic and electromagnetic field are classified into three categories; the effects of static magnetic field, time-varying magnetic field or low frequency and pulsed- magnetic field, and high frequency electromagnetic field or microwaves. The electromagnetic field of the wide frequency ranges from almost static to teraherz are used for power lines, industries, transportation, telecommunication, and medical devices. Guidelines for health effects of these electromagnetic field are issued by international and national institutions such as the ICNIRP (International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection) related to the WHO (World Health Organization). However, the mechanisms for biological and physical effects of electromagnetic field have not yet been well clarified. On the other hands, many useful applications of electromagnetic field have been introduced into advanced medical diagnoses and treatments such as MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) and TMS (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation).
In the lecture, after we classify the mechanisms of bioelectromagnetic effects, we discuss the biological and physical aspects of bioelectromagnetic interactions, focusing on the following medical applications.
- TMS (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation) to stimulate the human brain
- MEG (Magnetoencephalography) to study the human brain function
- MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) to obtain imaging of the human body
- Magnetic control of biological cell growth and cancer cell destruction
- Microwave control of iron release and uptake from and into cage proteins
